Maintaining Photo Supreme
Performance recommendations
The Catalog Folder
Photo Supreme relies on a database, so its speed depends on how fast the database can read and write data. To get the best performance, store your catalog files (cat.db and thumbs.db) on the fastest drive available, usually an internal SSD. The faster the drive, the better the application will run.
Avoid using an external drive or a network share for your catalog files, even if it’s an SSD. The database constantly creates, updates, and deletes temporary files, and any small interruption, like a loose cable or port failure, can corrupt your catalog. With external drives, this risk is much higher. It’s often not a matter of if corruption will happen, but when.
Virus Scanners
Photo Supreme should work smoothly under normal conditions. However, if you experience issues, the most common reason is interference from antivirus software scanning the database.
- If you're using the Server Edition, ensure that the virus scanner is not checking the SQL Server or PostgreSQL data folders.
- If you're using the Single User Edition, exclude the Catalog folder (where the cat.db and thumbs.db files are stored) from the virus scanner.
Since SQLite (used in the Single User Edition) creates temporary files, some antivirus programs may try to scan them, which can slow down the database significantly.
